   The City of Mathis is located 35 miles North of Corpus Christi on Interstate 37 on land originally
donated by Mr. Thomas H. Mathis.  Interstate 37  wasn't here yet  though.  The  Mathis Chamber of
Commerce  was  organized  in 1910  with  94  members  and  $300  in  the  treasury.   At the  first
meeting,  a motion  was made to take  down   the large fence surrounding the town (set up to keep
Mr.  Mathis' cattle  from  grazing  at  residents'  homes).   In  1913,  the  Missouri  Pacific  Railroad
reached Mathis and offered a shipping point for the area's produce which included onions, carrots,
cabbage and spinach.                                                                                                                                  

    The Mathis  Chamber  of  Commerce is proud to  invite you  to  visit your  hometown  away  from
home.   Along with  the 775,000 folks who visit  our area  every winter,  you  too can enjoy the many
RV  parks  located  nearby,  including  Lake  Corpus  Christi (just a few miles  away)  which  boasts
boating, fishing, hiking, biking and camping. If you'd like some city time,  Corpus Christi with it's fine
beaches and restaurants is just down the road a bit.
